Memorial Day is the unofficial start to the summer. Right now is the perfect time to get ready for the season with a fast, easy upgrade to your look at Dr. Ellen Mahony’s plastic surgery practice in Westport. Minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation procedures are at an all-time high and for good reason. They can help lines look smoother, cheeks look plumper, and lips look fuller.

Injectables aren’t just for celebrities and Real Housewives anymore. Now, affordable dermal fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic help our Fairfield and Westport, CT patients enhance their look while maintaining a very fresh, natural appearance. This summer newsletter’s theme is all about injectables, so let’s cover some basics.

Botox vs. Dysport: What’s the Difference

BOTOX and Dysport are 2 neurotoxins that are on the market for the temporary treatment of facial wrinkles related to animation, or muscle movement. These products are typically used for frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and horizontal forehead lines. Here are some of the basic yet slight differences between these 2 products and some helpful FYIs.

  • One difference between BOTOX and Dysport is the size of the treatment area affected. Dysport diffuses over a larger area, therefore it covers a little more “real estate” than BOTOX. As an example, the forehead area may require 6 injections of BOTOX but just 3 injections of Dysport. For areas that require a dose of neurotoxin in a very specific location, BOTOX can be a better option because it will not spread to unwanted areas
  • Dysport has a slightly quicker onset of action than BOTOX. You are likely to see a reduction in lines related to animation in just a few days, whereas BOTOX can take 1 to 2 weeks to see results. Dr. Mahony recommends waiting at least 2 weeks before considering adding additional BOTOX or Dysport to the area being treated to ensure that you are not over treated.
  • There is a small cost difference between the 2 products; Dysport is slightly less expensive.
  • We offer both products in order to come up with the most effective personalized treatment plan. Some patients even use a combination of the 2 products to achieve their goals.

Injectables for Prevention: A Good Reason to Start Early!

We all know slathering on sunscreen works to prevent premature photoaging — especially the dreaded brown spots from too much sun exposure. But the question is, do injectables similarly work to help prevent lines from forming? Yes, they do! Therefore, beginning to use neurotoxins in your 30s when lines start to appear is a good idea. The lines in our younger years are not yet etched into the skin — they only show up with animation but disappear when the face is relaxed. Don’t forget, neurotoxins are also great for softening lines you already have and preventing them from progressing. Starting young has some real financial bonuses:

  • Fewer lines means you’ll need less product.
  • Less product means fewer dollars spent.
  • Starting early means you’ll look better than anyone else when you are older!
  • And, you will have already invested in your future looks by your early head-start!
