Innie? Outie? Have a Belly Button You Love
Umbilicoplasty, also known as “belly button surgery” is a cosmetic procedure designed by Dr. Ellen Mahony to change the shape or appearance of the belly button. Like all things with aging, the belly button is affected by time, weight gain/loss, pregnancy, injury and piercings. Sometimes, a person may not like the look of their belly button and choose to change it from an “outtie” to an “innie” or from a round shape to a vertical shape. This procedure can be performed as a stand- alone procedure or in combination with other procedures, like a tummy tuck.
The umbilicus, or belly button, is the scar left behind after dividing the umbilical cord that connects a baby to its mother. The shape of the belly button is dependent on the nature of its attachment to the underlying muscle as well as the method in which it was divided at birth.
