Liposuction in Westport, CT

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that gently removes excess fat deposits from targeted areas of the body. The procedure is designed to contour and reshape specific areas rather than serve as a weight loss solution.

Liposuction may be used to treat areas such as:

  • Abdomen and waist

  • Hips and flanks

  • Thighs

  • Upper arms

  • Back

  • Chin and neck

  • Knees

The procedure can also be combined with other body contouring surgeries, including tummy tuck surgery or mommy makeover procedures, for more comprehensive results.

If you only have a small, localized area of fat and want to avoid general anesthesia, mini liposuction may be a good fit — it’s performed under local anesthesia in the office, with less downtime, and is best suited to patients close to their goal weight who need help with one or two specific spots.

Benefits of Luxury Liposuction

Liposuction can improve body contours and help patients achieve a more sculpted, proportionate appearance.

Benefits of liposuction may include:

  • Removal of localized areas of stubborn fat deposits

  • Sculpted body definition and contour

  • Slimmer, more refined proportions

  • Define and separate chest, waist and hip proportion

  • Enhanced confidence in clothing and swimwear

  • Long-lasting results with a healthy lifestyle

  • More defined waistline and silhouette

  • Customized treatment for multiple areas

Because every patient’s anatomy is unique, Dr. Mahony customizes each procedure to create refined, natural-looking results. One size does not fit all.

Dr. Ellen Mahony’s Approach to Luxury Liposuction

Dr. Mahony approaches liposuction as an art, not a mechanical procedure. Her goal is to achieve a natural-looking, sculpted result. This depends on an honest, hands-on assessment of your body and a clear conversation about what’s realistic for you. It’s not as simple as running a tool over problem areas. She can not do this evaluation on a Zoom call or a phone call. Dr. Mahony won’t give you less than her best effort and that starts with an in-person 1:1 visit.

How else does Dr. Mahony commit to providing the elevated care you deserve? She isn’t swayed by trends or social media hype. Her approach is grounded in years of experience that let her distinguish genuine liposuction advancements from marketing myths. She knows that the flashiest techniques aren’t actually the best and every patient needs a unique treatment plan. Luxury lipo is intentional; there is no one-size-fits-all.

Tumescent Liposuction: The Gold Standard

Dr. Mahony performs tumescent liposuction using light anesthetics and tiny blunt-tipped microcannulas — thin, rounded instruments that remove fat gently while protecting the surrounding nerves and tissue. Before surgery, the treatment area is infused with a wetting solution that reduces bleeding, bruising and inflammation while numbing the area, which is part of what makes this approach one of the safest available. It also allows her to treat larger areas, or multiple areas at once, with a smooth, blended 360 approach. Dr. Mahony’s luxury technique includes repositioning the patient numerous times to optimize her results while minimizing complications such as contour irregularities. That’s why tumescent liposuction has remained the ‘gold standard’ for body contouring, even as newer non-surgical alternatives (like ultrasound-assisted, laser, AI-assisted, or radiofrequency devices) have come to market.

Dr. Mahony evaluates these newer options as they emerge, but continues to favor tumescent liposuction for its simplicity, efficiency, low risk, consistency, and well-proven results.

Dr. Mahony’s surgical training goes beyond aesthetics — she trained extensively in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, with an additional year in Hand and Microsurgery, and has performed thousands of liposuction and body-contouring procedures across areas including the face, neck, chest, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs.

Lymphatic Drainage & Endermology Support

Liposuction directly disrupts fat and the lymphatic channels running through it, which is why swelling and fluid retention are a normal part of recovery. This is why Dr. Mahony’s concierge liposuction in Westport includes a multidisciplinary approach to your wellness and healing. She recommends sessions with a skilled endermologist as part of a smooth recovery from lipo.

Endermologist sessions after liposuction:

  • Support lymphatic drainage

  • Ease swelling

  • Reduce cellulite

  • Help your new contours settle smoothly as you heal

Fat Transfer: Using Your Own Fat

Fat removed during liposuction doesn’t have to be discarded — it can often be purified and re-injected into another area of the body that could use more volume, such as the face or buttocks.

This process is sometimes called autologous fat transfer, and it happens in three steps: fat is gently removed from a donor area, purified to separate healthy fat cells from fluid and oils, and then carefully re-injected in small amounts to help it survive in its new location. Because it’s your own tissue, there’s no risk of an allergic reaction, and results tend to feel more natural than synthetic fillers or implants. DNA-directed procedures like this can be enhanced with the addition of platelet rich plasma (PRP), to support the life of the transferred fat by adding exosomes and proteins adjuncts to healing. Dr. Mahony’s expertise in Regenerative Medicine contributes to her successful outcomes.

However, using fat transfer for breast augmentation has some real limitations. It typically requires a large volume of donor fat, and a meaningful portion of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed by the body over time. In addition, injected fat may liquify and create cysts, which can make screening breast mammograms and ultrasounds difficult to interpret.

When considering procedures to enhance breast volume and size, Dr. Mahony suggests keeping an open mind to the many available options. Alternatives to fat transfer breast augmentation include the Vampire Breast Lift and a variety of implants, including the most natural option, saline, as well as silicone gel. She offers Motiva implants and the Preserve breast augmentation technique. Your private consultation with Dr Mahony will include a transparent conversation of all options available to you.

Candidates for Liposuction

Liposuction may be a good option for healthy individuals who are close to their ideal weight but struggle with localized fat that does not respond to diet and exercise.

You may be a candidate if you:

  • Have stubborn pockets of fat

  • Maintain a stable weight

  • Have good skin elasticity

  • Want improved body contours

  • Want better chest, waist, and hip proportions

  • Are in good overall health

  • Have realistic expectations about results

Liposuction is not intended as a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. During your consultation, Dr. Mahony will discuss whether the procedure aligns with your goals.

Screening for Skin Quality

Liposuction works by removing fat — it doesn’t tighten skin. So before recommending it, Dr. Mahony evaluates your skin’s thickness, elasticity, and overall quality.

If your skin has lost significant elasticity and is unlikely to contract smoothly after fat removal, liposuction alone may not give you the result you’re hoping for. In this case, she’ll walk you through better-suited alternatives, such as a tummy tuck or body lift. As a board-certified plastic surgeon with a broad range of training, Dr. Mahony can offer this kind of honest comparison across multiple procedures, rather than presenting liposuction as a one-size-fits-all answer.

She’s also upfront about the possible downsides of any body-contouring procedure, including:

  • Scarring

  • Adhesions

  • Skin injury

  • Fibrosis

  • Contour irregularities

  • A rare condition called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (where fat can increase rather than decrease in the treated area)

  • Changes in skin laxity

This information about potential liposuction risks helps you make an informed decision with a full picture of both the short- and long-term results as well as the potential drawbacks to consider.

The Luxury Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using small, strategically placed incisions. A thin surgical tube called a cannula is used to gently remove excess fat while sculpting the surrounding contours.

The exact technique and treatment areas will depend on your anatomy and desired outcome. Dr. Mahony focuses on precision and proportion to help ensure smooth, natural-looking contours rather than an overdone appearance.

Dr. Mahony started her career as a physical therapist before becoming a surgeon, and that background still shapes how she practices today. She thinks in terms of how tissue heals and how the body moves, not just how it looks. That perspective carries into how she evaluates candidacy, plans each procedure, and guides patients through recovery.

ASK DR. MAHONY

I am a pretty big advocate for waiting until a young person “matures” – both in mind and body – before considering liposuction surgery. I’ve found that certain body types tend to hang on to fat during the pre-teen and teenage years more than others (there’s a reason it’s called baby fat!), and when you see them five or so years later, they’ve often dialed in their eating and exercise habits just as their bodies are adjusting to being in adult form! Liposuction shouldn’t be considered a quick-fix alternative to the healthy habits that (usually) address excess weight. As always, each case is individual, and certain genetic conditions can cause stubborn weight gain and require a visit with your specialist before any aesthetic procedure is performed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The general answer is that you’ll need about 3-5 days home from work and another 3-6 weeks before you do any strenuous exercise or lifting. The specific recommendation will need to wait until after your consultation. You will receive detailed recovery instructions will be given at our post-op visit during the week following your procedure. One thing you can count on is the value of massage and stretching after liposuction – it feels so good and helps with healing!
