Loose skin, stretched abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat around the midsection can make it difficult to achieve a firm, toned appearance, even with a consistent diet and exercise. Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and aging often change the contours of the abdomen in ways that cannot be corrected through lifestyle changes alone. A tummy tuck is a procedure that can help restore a smoother, flatter abdominal profile while improving overall body confidence with enhancement of aesthetic proportions.
At her boutique plastic surgery practice in Westport, CT, Dr. Ellen Mahony provides personalized tummy tuck procedures that deliver natural-looking, proportioned results. With extensive training in general, reconstructive, microsurgery, and cosmetic surgery, Dr. Mahony combines surgical precision with an artistic approach to help patients achieve a firmer, more sculpted silhouette tailored to their individual goals.

Dr. Ellen Mahony’s Tummy Tuck Surgery at a Glance
- Technique: Dr. Mahony’s unique tummy tuck technique offers natural, proportionate shaping with selective muscle tightening. Internal quilting stitches (called progressive tension sutures) redistribute tension to hold the skin securely against the muscle as it heals. This protocol is what allows most patients to go home without a surgical drain, meaning less discomfort, no drain care during recovery, and fewer restrictions on movement in the first couple of weeks.
- Pain management: A pain-control plan built around nerve blocks and scheduled non-narcotic medication means most patients need little to no opioid pain medication after surgery. A long-acting numbing injection (Exparel) is available if needed.
- Combined procedures: Hernia repair, belly button repositioning, and C-section scar revision can often be performed at the same time as your tummy tuck.
- Recovery support: A day-1 follow-up office visit is timed specifically to give you reassurance and peace of mind, which are critical to a successful recovery. We offer custom-fitted supportive garments and sessions with a skilled endermologist to promote lymphatic drainage, minimize cellulite, and support healing. You’ll also benefit from a customized preop and postop nutrition plan that includes the essential amino acids, minerals, and vitamins to support optimal wound healing and scar remodeling.
- Scar care: A multi-step scar care program that may include interventions like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and advanced stitching techniques designed to take tension off the healing incision, helping scars fade and flatten over time.
- Surgical setting: Dr. Mahony typically performs tummy tuck surgery at a private, fully accredited surgical center (Sasco Hill Surgery Center in Southport, CT) where patients enter through a private entrance and avoid a busy public waiting room.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the abdominal region. When our skin is stretched by external factors you’ve experienced, it’s hard to get it back to how it was before. The procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightening the underlying connective tissue to promote a younger, more toned appearance.
Benefits of a Tailored Tummy Tuck with Dr. Mahony
A tummy tuck can provide you with benefits that will last a lifetime. Some of these benefits include:
-
A Stronger Core: Tightens abdominal muscles and connective tissue to improve core strength, posture, and support.
-
Improved Health: Removing excess skin and fat may support a healthier, more active lifestyle.
-
Enhanced Appearance: Creates a flatter, smoother, more contoured abdominal profile.
-
Reduced Hernia Risk: Strengthening the abdominal wall can help reduce strain on the muscles and support them.
-
Greater Confidence: Many patients feel more comfortable and confident in clothing, swimwear, and everyday life.
Types of Tummy Tucks
There are a variety of tummy tuck styles (one size does not fit all) to meet the needs of just about every belly! Dr. Mahony believes it is important to customize the approach to best meet your goals and provide the optimal aesthetic outcome. Tummy tuck options include:
-
Mini Tummy Tuck: Removes a small amount of loose skin from the lower abdomen, often improving the appearance of a C-section scar.
-
Modified Tummy Tuck: Removes additional skin from the lower abdomen and may include tightening of the lower abdominal muscles, without repositioning the belly button.
-
Full Tummy Tuck: Removes excess abdominal skin, tightens upper and lower abdominal muscles, and repositions the belly button for comprehensive contouring.
-
Vertical Tummy Tuck: Designed for patients needing significant upper abdominal tightening with limited excess skin, resulting in a small vertical lower abdominal scar.
-
Extended Tummy Tuck: Uses a longer incision to address excess skin that extends beyond the abdomen toward the flanks and hips, creating smoother body contours.
-
Mons Pubis Lift: Elevates and reshapes a sagging mons pubis for a more youthful, natural appearance.
-
High Scar Tummy Tuck: Ideal for patients with mild loose skin or abdominal fullness who want contour improvement without a low or vertical tummy tuck scar.
Belly button repositioning, or umbilicoplasty, is a routine part of a full tummy tuck and can also be performed on its own to refine the shape or position of the navel.
Dr. Mahony’s Concierge Approach to Tailored Tummy Tuck Surgery
Many tummy tucks require a surgical drain — a small tube that removes fluid from beneath the skin while it heals. Dr. Mahony’s technique is designed to avoid this. She uses a stitching method called progressive tension sutures, which anchors the skin firmly to the muscle in layers as she closes the incision, rather than leaving a gap where fluid can collect.
She also uses a variety of wetting solutions during surgery that reduce bleeding, bruising, and inflammation to enhance the skin bond securely to the tissue beneath it. Together, these techniques allow most patients to go home without a drain — which typically means less discomfort during recovery, no drain site to clean or manage, and fewer restrictions on daily movement in the first couple of weeks after surgery.
How We Prevent Tummy Tuck Pain While Avoiding or Limiting Narcotics
As a wellness-oriented practice, we do not rely on narcotic pain medication after surgery. Dr. Mahony builds a plan that controls pain proactively, using several milder methods together. This approach is sometimes called Multimodal Analgesia (MMA) or an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol.
In practice, MMA or ERAS interventions to prevent tummy tuck pain may include:
- A long-acting numbing injection (such as Exparel) given during surgery to keep the area comfortable for the first two to three days, when appropriate
- Over-the-counter pain relievers, like acetaminophen and an anti-inflammatory, given on a set schedule so pain is managed continuously rather than treated after it starts
- Muscle relaxants or nerve-calming medication if you experience muscle spasms or shooting sensations
- Narcotic medication kept on hand only as a backup for breakthrough pain, and typically no longer needed after the first few days
- Simple physical measures — rest, elevation, cold therapy, and a compression garment — to keep swelling down
The goal is to keep you comfortable while minimizing how much opioid medication you need, if any.
Knowing what you will feel after surgery is the first step to enjoying a more comfortable recovery. Dr. Mahony and her team excel in their personalized approach to surgical planning. They will explain what you can expect from the entire experience as well as any additional measures they recommend in your unique situation to support your tummy tuck recovery.
Combining Procedures: Hernia Repair, Umbilicoplasty, and C-Section Scar Revision
If you have separated abdominal muscles (called diastasis recti) or an umbilical hernia, this can often be repaired in the same surgery as your tummy tuck — Dr. Mahony can frequently stitch the muscles back together without needing a mesh patch. Reshaping the belly button, called umbilicoplasty, is also a normal part of a full tummy tuck. And if you have a C-section scar, your tummy tuck incision can often be planned to improve or replace it. If you’ve had a C-section, it’s best to wait 6 to 12 months before a tummy tuck, so your body has time to fully heal and your weight has stabilized.
Why We See You the Day After Surgery and Why We’ll Be Seeing a Lot of You
“I want you to feel cared for from day one — not just examined, but reassured. Patients who feel truly supported early in recovery tend to heal better, and that peace of mind matters as much to me as the surgery itself.”
— Dr. Ellen Mahony
Patients are seen in the office the day after surgery — not as a formality, but because a closely supported recovery calms the mind and supports the body. This is a formula for speedy, complication-free healing. Knowing your surgeon and team are immediately available gives you real peace of mind during the most sensitive part of recovery, which contributes directly to a smoother outcome.
Lymphatic Drainage and Endermology Support
A tummy tuck involves lifting and repositioning the abdominal skin, which can disrupt the body’s normal lymphatic drainage pathways for a period during recovery. Research published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, (opens in new tab) the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, has documented that abdominoplasty significantly changes these drainage pathways in most patients.
This change is why Dr. Mahony’s luxury approach to wellness and healing includes sessions with a skilled endermologist as part of recovery. Endermology supports lymphatic drainage, reduces cellulite, helps manage swelling, and optimizes contour while your body re-establishes its normal fluid balance.

Dr. Mahony started her career as a physical therapist before becoming a surgeon, and that background still shapes how she practices today — she thinks in terms of overall wellness, how tissue heals and how the body moves, not just how it looks. That perspective carries into her surgical planning, her technique in the operating room, and the recovery guidance she gives patients, so results hold up over time and feel as natural as they look.
Recovery and Scar Care
Recovery is planned just as carefully as the surgery itself:
- Nutrition guidance before and after surgery to help your body heal
- Custom-fitted supportive garments to wear during recovery for comfort and support
- Sessions with a skilled endermologist to promote lymphatic drainage, reduce swelling, and optimize contour as you heal
- A follow-up visit the day after surgery, so any questions or concerns are addressed early
- Optional overnight private duty nursing for the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery — available to patients recovering at home in Westport, Greenwich, or New Canaan, to help manage comfort and answer questions during the earliest, most sensitive part of recovery
- A multi-step scar care program that may include silicone treatment, gentle pressure therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to support smoother, flatter healing
Of course, reducing the appearance of tummy tuck scars starts during the procedure. Dr. Mahony’s unique approach promotes collagen alignment and remodeling — the biological process behind real healing — through tension-free sutures and a multilayer soft-tissue and skin closure. Many providers close in just two layers; our more detailed, multilayer approach is part of why our patients tend to enjoy fewer contour irregularities and better-looking scars.

I can relate to any workout obsession (read about my 2014 bodybuilding obsession!) Even though you’ll have amazing results after your tummy tuck, you still need to keep the underlying muscles strong and flexible. You’ll have to wait about 6-10 weeks post-op; the time varies depending on whether muscle tightening work was done during your surgery. We’ll work together in your post-op appointment to craft a plan to slowly ramp up your activity and to get you back to crunches and other exercises for your midsection there is no question that what you do after the surgery to finesse your results will continue to contribute to the overall result!
While everyone’s recovery time is different, if you follow your post-op instructions, you should have no problem slipping into your favorite bikini by the warm summer months here in Fairfield County, CT! I find most women need to be reminded to slow down and allow their body to heal at its own pace – don’t try to do too much! You’ll be able to start exercising again about 4 weeks after surgery, depending on your regimen. We’ll create a great plan together in your post-op consultation. I’m a fitness fanatic myself, so I’ll be cheering you on your way to a beautiful recovery!
Gosh, I hope not! In a full tummy tuck, your belly button appears in a new location on your belly after all the skin is tightened. Here’s how it works: The belly button is actually attached at its base to the muscle area. During the surgery, the part that you can see is separated from the surrounding skin. Then, once the tummy is tightened and the skin repositioned, your belly button is brought up and out through a new opening. I like to shape it as an oval, and I think they look way better!
During a tummy tuck, an incision is made on the lower belly. Excess skin is removed from there, and the abdominal connective tissues are tightened. Excess fat is disposed of using liposuction.
Not necessarily. Dr. Mahony’s preferred technique uses a stitching method that holds the skin securely against the muscle as it heals, along with steps during surgery that reduce bleeding and help the skin bond to the tissue underneath. Together, this allows many patients to go home drain-free. Whether it’s right for you depends on your anatomy and the extent of your procedure — Dr. Mahony will walk you through this during your consultation.
Patients can typically return to their jobs within two weeks. Swelling and bruising are fairly common after the procedure and will subside over a few weeks. Full recovery usually takes at least 6 weeks and can last up to a few months.
It’s perfectly safe to have a tummy tuck before pregnancy; however, it is recommended to wait until after you are done having children to get the procedure done. The reason for this is that any results that you gain from the tummy tuck procedure would likely be diminished by the changes your body goes through during pregnancy.
