Your neck contains some of the most delicate and sensitive skin on your body. It’s also one of the first areas to show signs of aging. The skin around the neck and jawline can become slack, resulting in a “wattle” that can be difficult to remove even with proper exercise, diet, and skin care. This is why so many men and women in Connecticut choose procedures such as a neck lift at Dr. Ellen Mahony’s cosmetic surgery practice.

What Is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve visible signs of aging in the neck and jawline. The procedure can tighten loose skin, reduce excess fat beneath the chin, and improve muscle laxity to create smoother, more defined neck contours and a more youthful overall appearance.
For many patients, a neck lift can be combined with liposuction for the neck and jaw region, thread lifts for the mid-face region, eyelid surgery, or a face lift. In fact, a neck lift is very often a part of a more comprehensive Menopause Makeover.
In addition, Dr. Mahony recommends that you prep for your necklift surgery with one of her Platelet-Rich Plasma procedures to address the deepest layers of your face and neck skin by stimulating collagen production, increasing blood flow, and stimulating elastin fiber repair.

ASK DR. MAHONY
No, regrettably, nothing is permanent! The aging process continues every minute despite the steps we may take to slow it down. I would hope that 5-8 years or greater could be expected. Factors that will influence this duration include your health, age, weight, skin quality, and the steps you take to protect your neck in the future.
I wish I had a magic time-stopping capsule we could all go to sleep in each night to help slow (or reverse!) the signs of aging. Unfortunately, aging is happening every minute. I recommend that my necklift patients keep their weight stabilized, maintain a healthy diet, and use physician-grade skincare products to keep the texture of the skin moist and supple.
Neck Lift surgery can be accomplished from a variety of incisions, depending on the extent of the procedure. As an example, a person with a heavy ‘turkey gobbler’ neck may best achieve her/his goals with an incision in front of the ear, extending to behind the ear, and also an incision below the chin. Another person may need only an incision in front of the ear, or even just below the chin. Dr. Mahony will make recommendations based on your individual goals and physical exam.
Just like the face, the laxity we see in the neck is a combination of loose skin and stretched muscle. This combination changes the neck’s slope and adds redundancy in soft-tissue folds… turkey gobbler neck.
Age is not really the most important variable. Instead, focus on whether the procedure is appropriate and likely to meet your goals.
Most people experience a sense of tightness when turning their head. In addition, there may be some numbness. Dr. Mahony likes everyone to wear a contouring garment (similar to a headband) for about a week after the surgery. But you can shower the next day!
Plan on 5-7 days as a minimum.
