Dermal fillers offer a non-surgical way to restore lost facial volume, soften wrinkles, enhance contours, and create a smoother, more refreshed appearance. As we age, natural collagen, fat, and hyaluronic acid gradually diminish, leading to facial hollowing, folds, and decreased skin support. Injectable fillers can help restore youthful balance and definition while maintaining natural facial expression.
At her boutique plastic surgery practice in Westport, CT, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ellen Mahony provides personalized dermal filler treatments tailored to each patient’s facial anatomy, skin quality, and aesthetic goals. Her refined approach focuses on subtle, elegant rejuvenation rather than an overfilled or artificial appearance.
Which Dermal Fillers Are Right for You?
During your consultation, Dr. Mahony will evaluate your facial structure, skin condition, aesthetic goals, and lifestyle to recommend the most appropriate filler treatment plan for your needs.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid fillers are designed to restore hydration, volume, and smoothness to the face. These fillers can soften wrinkles, fill hollows, and enhance facial contours while maintaining natural movement and expression.
Common hyaluronic acid fillers include:
-
JUVÉDERM®
-
Volbella®
-
Voluma®
-
Vollure®
-
Restylane®
-
PREVELLE®
Each filler has unique properties related to softness, structure, longevity, and flexibility. Dr. Mahony carefully selects the appropriate product based on the treatment area and desired result.
Longer-Lasting Fillers
For patients with deeper volume loss or facial contour concerns, longer-lasting fillers may provide additional structure and support.
These fillers may include:
-
RADIESSE®
-
Perlane®
-
Sculptra®
These products are often used to enhance cheek definition, improve jawline contour, and soften deeper folds and jowls.
Liquid Facelift
A liquid facelift combines fillers with neurotoxins such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® to create a more comprehensive non-surgical facial rejuvenation plan. This customized approach can restore volume, soften wrinkles, and improve facial balance without surgery.
Combining Fillers With Other Treatments
For patients experiencing skin laxity, sun damage, or more advanced signs of aging, Dr. Mahony may recommend combining fillers with additional rejuvenation procedures, including:
-
Chemical peels
-
Thread lifts
-
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments
-
Laser treatments
-
Surgical facial rejuvenation procedures
Combining treatments can enhance overall skin quality and provide more comprehensive, long-lasting rejuvenation results.
Fat Transfer for Natural Facial Rejuvenation
In addition to traditional injectable fillers, Dr. Mahony offers fat transfer as a natural alternative for restoring facial volume. Fat transfer uses your body’s own fat cells to smooth wrinkles, soften hollows, and enhance facial contours in areas such as the cheeks, lips, and under-eye region.
During the procedure, fat is gently removed from areas such as the abdomen or thighs, carefully processed, and strategically injected into targeted facial areas. This advanced technique not only restores volume but also introduces regenerative components that may help improve overall skin quality.
For select patients, Dr. Mahony may also recommend a dermal fat graft, which combines fat with dermal tissue to further enhance volume retention and rejuvenation.

Frequently Asked Questions
The short answer is: yes. However, there are many factors to consider, such as the type of filler used and how much was injected. Permanent fillers such as Bellafill, Silicone, and Radiesse don’t give you as many options if you are over-injected. And because these are permanent, as you age and your facial skin and bone shift, it can appear that the lips are overstretched because the skin sags and the filler stays put. Not. A. Good. Look. Dr. Mahony takes a very artistic and careful approach to filler, especially for the lips, so that our patients do not end up with results they’ll regret later.
There are many areas of the face that can be greatly enhanced with dermal fillers. One area that is often a homerun for many patients is the cheeks. Dermal fillers can restore volume and shape the mid-face, which is particularly prone to losing volume with aging. Dermal fillers can also be used to fill in smile lines, marionette lines, vertical lip lines, as well as eye hollows. Dermal fillers look great in the lips, making them appear fuller or achieving a pouty look. A small amount of dermal filler can even be used to fill in indentations caused by large acne scars.
Although fillers help with the inevitable loss of facial volume that comes with aging, our skin continues to age, and fillers do not improve skin quality. This is why we are diligent about skincare with our injectable patients. We recommend using sunscreen daily, as well as using our anti-aging skincare products and getting chemical peels regularly. Regular Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) procedures are also a great way to keep your skin in great shape. A dual-sided approach to facial aging is the most effective!
There is a good chance you may never WANT to stop using fillers once you see how even a few millimeters of volume can make a huge difference in your look! If, for some reason, you wish to discontinue fillers (for example, you may move forward with a facelift), the product will eventually be absorbed by your body. Over time, you’ll notice that your ‘look’ returns to your previous status.
Any time you use a sharp needle to inject a substance into the skin, there is a risk for bruising. The face is a highly vascular area, and it is easy to injure a small blood vessel during the injection process. The good news is there are many steps you can take to minimize your risk for bruising. These include avoiding blood-thinning medications like Advil, Aspirin, and Aleve a week prior to treatment. Also, skipping your wine with dinner the night before treatment is a good idea. Applying an ice pack post-injection is another trick we use to reduce bruising. Lastly, using our product containing Arnica and Tissue Repair Gel, the following treatment can expedite tissue healing and help bruises disappear more quickly. Unfortunately, bruises can be inevitable, but the good news is that a good concealer works wonders to cover them up!
