As men age, hormonal changes, genetics, and lifestyle factors can lead to stubborn fat accumulation around the waist and abdomen, even without significant weight gain. Many men notice a thicker midsection, loss of definition, and a shift away from the lean, masculine V-shaped physique they once had. Unfortunately, these problem areas are often resistant to diet and exercise alone, leading many to search for male procedures.
At her boutique plastic surgery practice in Westport, CT, Dr. Ellen Mahony offers personalized body contouring procedures designed to help men achieve a leaner, more sculpted appearance. With advanced cosmetic surgery expertise and a refined aesthetic approach, Dr. Mahony creates natural-looking results that enhance masculine contours and overall confidence.
What is Liposuction for Men?
Liposuction for men is tailored to restoring the V-look, which is broadest at the shoulders and tapers to a narrow waistline. With liposuction, which removes fat from targeted areas, men can achieve the proportions they have not been able to through simply working out and eating healthy. For men, the belly is a common area of concern, and liposuction is also used to sculpt the chest and reduce a double chin or a thick neck.

I can answer with a resounding yes! In fact, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction was the top surgical procedure for men in 2018.
While it is difficult to predict your exact pant size after liposuction, I can offer you a good idea. Just be sure to wait until your results are final and all swelling has subsided before heading to the tailor!
I understand that you will be excited to return to the gym and work on improving your physique after your liposuction procedure. However, you will have to wait about 3 weeks before you can get back to the gym.
Liposuction works by removing fat cells from the treated area. Your body does not grow new fat cells, so in that sense, your belly will not return. However, the remaining fat cells can get larger if you gain a lot of weight. This is why I recommend maintaining your weight and eating healthy to all of my liposuction patients – whatever the area treated.
During tumescent liposuction, small incisions are made in the skin to remove a specified amount of fatty tissue. Through the incisions, saltwater and a numbing medicine (Tumescent Solution) are injected into the fat to reduce bleeding and pain and minimize the risk of contour irregularities. The next step is to remove the unwanted fat via small instruments using suction. Once the fat cells are removed, they do not grow back or reappear.
With liposuction, you should expect some bruising and swelling for about 10 days. Time out of work varies by individual but may be as little as 2-3 days. Anticipate another 3 weeks before you hit the gym or do any heavy lifting.
Yes, after your treatment, you will need to wear a compression garment during your healing time. I recommend wearing it all day and night at first. After your first couple of weeks, around the time you can return to the gym, you can keep wearing it only at night.
Most complications from liposuction are minor and temporary, such as bruising, swelling, and tenderness. You may have heard there is a risk of getting lumps after surgery, but you can avoid them by making a few choices after surgery to support the best possible recovery and results. These include: eating a clean diet (avoid processed/salty foods, sugary beverages, and alcohol), drinking lots of water, exercising (after 3 weeks), getting good sleep, and performing self-massage to the areas to be treated. Most of these behaviors should begin immediately after surgery – especially massage of the treated areas, which should start gently and progress in intensity. When you visit for your post-op appointment, Dr. Mahony will assess your progress and recommend one or two professional lymphatic massage sessions, if necessary. Other, more serious possible complications are rare and will be discussed at your consultation relative to your health history. This is why Dr. Mahony conducts a thorough medical assessment before any surgery.
You will not have pain during the procedure because you will have received the Tumescent Solution in addition to some level of additional anesthesia. After your liposuction treatment, you will probably experience some swelling, bruising and numbness. Many patients manage well after surgery with massage and Tylenol. In some cases, Dr. Mahony will prescribe pain medication.
You can treat any area with unwanted fat. In addition to the belt line, other common areas for male patients to have liposuction include the chest – a male breast reduction – the back flanks, inner thighs, and the double chin.
Liposuction is an ideal solution for patients with localized fat that does not respond to diet and exercise. If you are fit everywhere except your belly, the procedure will most likely help you achieve something closer to that coveted V-shape. Based on your physiology and health history, Dr. Mahony will determine the amount of fat that can be removed – generally it is less than 5,000 cc’s. She will also discuss realistic expectations with you based on her assessment at your initial consultation.
Each person has a limited number of fat cells, which are developed by the time you are a teenager. These cells can enlarge or shrink, but in adults, additional fat cells cannot develop. With liposuction, a portion of the fat cells is removed, so results will be permanent because the overall number of fat cells will have been reduced. The remaining cells can grow larger depending on your dietary and exercise habits, but it would be difficult for them to return your belly to its original size because there would be far fewer of them.
