A Stroll Around Westport
Nestled on Long Island Sound, Westport’s nickname is “The Gold Coast of Connecticut.” And it’s easy to see why. Westport is a bustling, eclectic community, offering visitors an abundance of stimulating cultural and recreational activities, as well as sophisticated shopping along its quaint Main Street.
Are you a foodie? You’ve come to the right place, with a choice of Zagat-rated restaurants, ranging from upscale Italian to same-day-fresh seafood. (Our favorite: the cozy Tavern on Main, a historic tavern with exposed beams and an original fireplace.) After dinner, stroll over the flag-festooned bridge and catch the evening breeze. On the water below, egrets, swans, and other waterfowl dine at sunset, sharing the tranquil Saugatuck River with Westport’s nationally-ranked rowing crews cutting the still water. Also, be sure to stop along your walk for an ice cream or cappuccino!
Westport enjoys a long-held reputation as an active arts community. And there’s no better testament to that heritage than The Westport Country Playhouse, one of America’s most revered professional theaters, where you can take in an award-winning play. In July, our downtown hosts the annual Arts Festival. Meanwhile, our just-renovated, open-air Levitt Pavilion offers evening concerts all summer long. Adjoining the pavilion is our state-of-the-art Westport Public Library, one of the nation’s finest, perfect for quiet browsing, reflection, writing, or viewing the rotating art exhibits.
More? Pack your swimsuit. Westport features 5½ miles of beach along scenic Long Island Sound. During the summer, you have easy access to sand and surf at the town’s Compo Beach, which offers calm waters, picnic areas, barbeque facilities, and the famous Joey’s snack bar. Within walking distance is our Longshore Complex, which features one of America’s best-kept public golf courses, along with tennis, sailing, kayaking, swimming pools, and a bathing pavilion.
Nightlife can begin at the beach with a drink overlooking sunset on Long Island Sound at La Plage, an Asian fusion restaurant with live music on the patio Saturdays and Sundays. In the winter, the patio overlooks the public ice skating rink. Lace up and join in the fun!
Of course, you can’t possibly leave without shopping, can you? On our Main Street, known as the Rodeo Drive of Connecticut, shop for art and antiques, for the latest fashions, and for a bauble or two at Tiffany’s.
Enjoy your day, all within steps of Dr. Ellen Mahony’s office. Plan your “rejuvenation vacation” now!
