As a mother, you know what it means to make sacrifices for your children, and you do so willingly and lovingly. One sacrifice you don’t have to make, however, is your appearance and self-confidence. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations can leave lasting changes such as loose abdominal skin, stubborn fat, stretched muscles, and changes in breast shape and volume.
A mommy makeover is a customized combination of procedures designed to restore smoother body contours and help you feel more confident in your appearance again. At her boutique plastic surgery practice in Westport, CT, Dr. Ellen Mahony provides personalized mommy makeover procedures tailored to each patient’s unique goals, combining advanced surgical expertise with a refined, natural-looking aesthetic approach.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover is a combination of procedures designed to restore a woman’s figure after pregnancy and childbirth. Because it can affect several different areas, the results can be very dramatic. Dr. Mahoby’s Mommy Makeover patients tend to be among her most satisfied, because the process helps them rejuvenate their feelings of confidence and femininity, which they often haven’t felt in quite some time.
Benefits of a Mommy Makeover
A mommy makeover can address multiple post-pregnancy concerns in a single customized treatment plan, helping restore smoother body contours and renewed confidence.
Benefits of a mommy makeover may include:
-
Comprehensive Results: Addresses multiple areas, including the breasts, abdomen, waist, and stubborn fat, in a single surgical plan.
-
Single Recovery Period: Combining procedures into one surgery means only one recovery timeline instead of multiple separate recoveries.
-
Customized Treatment: Every mommy makeover is tailored to your unique body, concerns, and aesthetic goals.
-
Restored Confidence: Helps many women feel more comfortable and confident in their appearance after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
-
Improved Body Contours: Tightens loose skin, restores breast shape, and refines stubborn fat deposits for a more balanced silhouette.
-
Potential Cost Savings: Combining procedures may reduce certain surgical and recovery-related expenses compared to performing them separately.

ASK DR. MAHONY
I understand your concerns, and many women share them – believe me, I hear it all the time. I like to be very honest with my patients, though, so I’ll tell it to you straight. 1) The scar is pretty much a given, as it’s the only way to reduce the “pouch” and tighten the skin that’s been so stretched with those babies! Continuing with the honesty theme, as a board-certified plastic surgeon who has performed hundreds of these surgeries, I’m very skilled at incisions – both the placement and the closing sutures – which are half the battle in getting a good result. I promise you, you’ll be so pleased with your new body, I think you’ll forget you even had these concerns.
You’re not alone! Many of my Mommy Makeover patients tell me that while the number on the scale might be close to what it was pre-baby, they just don’t feel like their body shape is the same. And the hips and thighs are very hormonal areas for storing weight, so that makes sense. During our consultation, we’ll discuss in detail the changes you’ve experienced in your body and your expectations. I’ll then tailor a Mommy Makeover just for you, with the exact level of attention to each area of your body that concerns you. It’s really one of my favorite procedures to perform because each one is so unique based on the moms I work with.
In my practice, it’s Liposuction or Tummy Tuck with either a Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift. Most of the time, it’s a body-and-breast combination, since those are the two areas where motherhood has the biggest impact!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, of course! This combination of procedures gained popularity when women - and their doctors – realized that it addressed several of the common complaints women often have after childbearing: a sagging tummy, drooping breasts and fat deposits in the hip and/or thigh area, none of which respond to diet or exercise. But the reality is that many women experience these issues regardless of whether they’ve had children or not. Whatever your situation, it’s a powerful solution that will absolutely refresh your body and bring back your confidence.
While it may be tempting to get your body back right away, it is recommended that you postpone your Mommy Makeover until you are sure you’re done having those kiddos! The main procedure most women seek in this transformation is the tummy tuck – you don’t want to get your flat tummy back and then months or even a couple of years later, stretch that skin with a new pregnancy.
Having some help over the first 3-5 days will make your life much easier, especially if you have other little ones at home! You will have restrictions on lifting, pushing, pulling and bending. The first time in and out of the shower, putting the post op garment on and getting into the bathroom will be much easier with some assistance. After 5 days, it depends on how well you feel and your confidence in managing your home, and yourself!
While it’s certainly possible – and you can breastfeed after having breast augmentation surgery – it is not recommended if you think you’ll be expanding your family in the future. The main reason is that it’s better for you and your budget to undergo general anesthesia and surgery recovery just once. By combining the procedures in a Mommy Makeover – breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and, often, a bit of liposuction – you only need anesthesia once. In addition, any help you require after surgery and any time off from work are only provided once.
Your recovery time depends on which procedures you and Ellen decide to combine for your Mommy Makeover. Combining a tummy tuck with a breast procedure is the most common, and that usually requires 2 weeks or more. You’ll leave wearing a surgical support garment, and Dr. Mahony will advise you when you can switch to a soft sports bra. You are encouraged to sleep in an elevated position for the first few nights after surgery, either on your bed with pillows propping you up or in a recliner. You need someone to drive you home after your outpatient surgery and stay with you for at least the next 24 hours. Any discomfort can be managed with prescription and over-the-counter pain medications. You’ll typically see Dr. Mahony the day after surgery, and you’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions on changing bandages, showering, restrictions on lifting, returning for follow-up appointments, and other issues. You are encouraged to begin walking about as soon as you can after surgery, and then you can resume further activity slowly over the course of a couple of months. Dr. Mahony has found that her patients who are in good health and follow her instructions carefully tend to heal the fastest. She and her team are eager to answer any questions you may have during this time and are glad to make themselves available by phone or in the office.
Yes, in most cases. If you think you might have more children after your Mommy Makeover, be sure to discuss this with Dr. Mahony. Using certain breast surgery techniques, she can take care to avoid the glands and ducts that are necessary for breastfeeding, no matter which kind of breast enhancement procedure you get.
Dr. Mahony knows how excited you are to shop for new, pretty bras to complement your new, pretty breasts. In general, 4 to 6 weeks after surgery is probably a good ballpark number. Especially for breast augmentation patients who get implants, it may be best to start by purchasing just a few bras at this time in case your implants settle more. Then you can make a bigger investment and purchase more bras later on. Be sure to have some comfortable, no-underwire sports bras that are the right size to accommodate your breasts in the first few weeks after your surgery while you heal. Our team can help you determine which sizes to purchase. See Dr. Mahony’s results: before and after Mommy Makeover.
