From Thinning to Thriving: PRP Scalp Treatments for Men and Women

Thinning hair can affect men and women at different ages, and it doesn’t always begin with a noticeable bald spot. A widening part, increased shedding, or reduced density around the crown and temples may be early signs. PRP hair restoration uses components from your own blood to support weakened follicles and encourage thicker, healthier-looking hair without surgery.

At Ellen Mahony, MD in Westport, CT, Dr. Ellen Mahony performs regenerative treatments for adults experiencing hair loss or thinning. She’s certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and completed plastic and reconstructive surgery training, as well as a hand and microsurgery fellowship, at the University of Pennsylvania.

What Happens During PRP Scalp Therapy?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. During treatment, we draw a small amount of your blood and process it in a centrifuge to separate plasma with a concentrated level of platelets. These platelets contain growth factors involved in tissue repair and cell activity.

After a numbing cream is applied, the PRP is injected into selected areas of the scalp. The goal is to stimulate follicles, support existing strands, and improve hair density over time. Because the treatment uses your own blood, no synthetic filler or donor material is introduced.

Men and Women Can Experience Different Patterns

Men often notice recession near the hairline or thinning at the crown. Women may see a widening part, reduced density across the top of the scalp, or thinning near the temples. Hormonal shifts, genetics, stress, medications, and certain medical conditions can all contribute.

PRP may be considered for some men and women with early-stage thinning, particularly pattern hair loss. It tends to work better when hair loss is relatively recent and is less likely to help areas with follicles that have been dormant for a long time.

Results Develop Gradually

PRP scalp therapy is completed in the office with little interruption to your routine. Mild tenderness or sensitivity around the injection sites can occur, but it generally settles quickly. You may be asked to avoid hair products for a brief period and treat your scalp gently afterward.

Hair grows in cycles, so changes won’t appear overnight. Some people begin noticing improvements in texture or growth within a few months, while fuller changes can take six months or longer. A series of sessions and periodic maintenance may be recommended.
