Case #2537
Male Breast Reduction
It’s very common for men to experience an increase in chest volume as they journey through middle age. The technical term for this is “gynecomastia.” There are many factors that can contribute to gynecomastia but in this case, an increase in skin laxity and underlying fatty volume, are the culprits.
This gentleman was interested in learning what options were available for treating his particular case. He met with Dr Mahony for an educational consultation on the particulars. He learned that gynecomastia can be treated with either liposuction, excision of skin and soft tissue or sometimes a combination of both. Since the issue of skin laxity was relatively minor, liposuction alone was the best choice for him.
The surgery was performed on an outpatient basis through ¼ inch incisions at the edge of each areola. Approximately 400cc of fatty tissue was removed from each half of his chest. He went home with a compression vest that was worn under his suit and clothes. On his first day post operatively, Dr Mahony reviewed a massage technique to be performed 2-3x per day. The purpose of the massage was to reduce swelling and minimize any possible contour irregularities. Within 2 weeks he was feeling well enough to resume some of his physical/gym activities! He’s having a great time at the beach this summer!
