What is Sclerotherapy?

The only way to treat dysfunctional veins, those that are visible and swollen, is to close them or remove them. Otherwise, the veins that hold stagnant blood can cause persistent, frustrating symptoms. Sclerotherapy is one of the longest-standing vein treatments performed to close veins that aren't pushing blood up and out of the limbs. Sclerotherapy is often performed on the ankles and legs but may also be performed on the face and other areas. This convenient treatment works by injecting small amounts of an FDA-approved chemical agent. The medication causes the inside lining of the vein to become sticky, resulting in the walls of the vein collapsing inward. Sclerotherapy has been performed millions of times all around the world.

What Conditions can Sclerotherapy Treat?

Sclerotherapy is a treatment that is commonly performed on spider veins. These are the tiny veins that appear just under the skin's surface. They are usually asymptomatic but can cause significant disruption to your appearance and your confidence! The injectable procedure can also be performed on varicose veins. These are the more prominent veins that appear to bulge beneath the skin. Varicose veins may be discolored, painful, and ropy. They may also come with additional symptoms around the affected area, such as leg cramps, restless legs syndrome, and, if severe, chronic skin ulcers.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Sclerotherapy Treatment?

The sclerotherapy procedure is safe and effective for most people. If you want to get rid of noticeable, visible, painful veins, schedule a consultation with Dr. Mahony! During your visit, she will evaluate your veins, review your medical history, and discuss how the treatment is performed. You can receive answers to all of your questions about your veins and how the treatment works, as well as what you can expect. Generally, sclerotherapy can be performed safely and successfully on patients who are in good general health.

How Many Sclerotherapy Treatments Will I Need Before I See Results?

Some veins resolve with just one round of sclerotherapy injections. This can depend on the size of the vein, your general health, and other factors. After a few weeks, you can expect to see a satisfying difference in the appearance of your treated veins. If the veins persist after that time, we can schedule another session. Following each visit, the body takes two or more weeks to close and eliminate the treated veins. Usually, we see full clearance within four sessions.

What is the Recovery like After Sclerotherapy?

The recovery after sclerotherapy is relatively easy. You will be instructed to wear compression stockings for some time. This may be daily for a few weeks with the removal of the stockings while you sleep. Dr. Mahony will provide you with clear instructions for how to wear compression, as well as an explanation as to why. You may need to change bandages that cover the injection sites or clean the skin around them very carefully.

What Should I Avoid After Sclerotherapy?

You can resume most normal activities the same day you receive sclerotherapy. However, you should avoid strenuous activities. Walking is necessary, running is not and could exacerbate normal post-treatment swelling. You may also be advised to avoid extreme heat, such as a hot bath, hot tub use, or sauna use. Sun exposure should also be limited for a week or two. Swimming should also be postponed until your skin has completely healed from your injections.
