Let A Surgeon Tell You About Silicone Breast Implants

by Ellen Mahony

You’ve asked your friends and family and all the online forums you can find about advice and experiences. You’re smart because you’re doing your research and you want to know what’s best for you. But the truth is, what worked for everyone else won’t be exactly what you need. You’re a unique individual and you deserve a unique experience. At my surgery practice, I tell it like it is and customize a cosmetic surgery plan to fit your every need. Let me tell you about my experience with certain procedures and types of breast implants and give you all the correct information so we can work together to make sure you get the best possible outcome for you.

Our Experience With Silicone Breast Implants

In cases where women have silicone breast implants, they are informed before their procedure of the FDA’s recommendation to receive an MRI after the first 3 years, and then every two years thereafter. Most women know this, but because of the out-of-pocket expense, they are reluctant to do it. I will be honest with you – I have noticed that women are not obtaining the MRIs for silicone implants until they have symptoms. They may notice a contour irregularity in their breast, or they may notice tightening of the breast implant or tightening of the chest wall and a sense of discomfort.

So, by the time a woman comes in for an evaluation with these types of findings, there’s a really good chance that the implant has already leaked. And at the very least, there’s development of a capsular contracture. Surgical management of a capsular contracture due to a gel leak can range from a single procedure to multiple or staged procedures, most often not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.

Silent Rupture Risk of Silicone Implants

This is not meant to scare anyone away from silicone implants, but to inform women of the risks that are out there, and to remind them to do their part in staying aware. Unfortunately when a silicone breast implant ruptures, a woman will not know until she starts to notice symptoms. This is called a silent rupture. In other implants like saline and the IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implant, a woman will be able to instantly detect a rupture because it will deflate and change shape. Because both the IDEAL IMPLANT and saline implants are filled with a saline solution rather than the silicone gel in silicone implants, the instantly detected rupture is no cause for alarm. Just a call to the surgeon and a quick procedure will fix the problem.

Unfortunately, because silicone breast implant ruptures are silent, a woman could go a long time with gel leaking into her body without knowing, causing the need for time consuming and expensive procedures. The truth is, every implant presents a small risk of something, and silicone implants provide a lot of ideal characteristics, including a very natural look and feel. For most women who stay on top of their MRI appointments, silicone breast implants are not a problem. For women who worry or don’t want to receive regular MRI’s, there are other options.

The IDEAL IMPLANT

The IDEAL IMPLANT is the latest in implant technology and is growing in popularity because of its innovative design. With its layered structure and saline filling, this implant looks and feels like a natural breast while providing the peace of mind of a harmless salt water solution inside. It also has dramatically lower rupture and capsule contracture rates than 3 major types of silicone breast implants, as proven in the last eight years in a recent study conducted by the Ideal Implant company.

I know that women’s goals when considering breast implant surgery are to look good, feel good – and to look and feel natural. It’s important to recognize that as surgeons and patients learn more about the various implant devices on the market, women patients have added device safety to their top list of breast implant surgery goals. Women are looking for natural choices for helping themselves to feel and look their best however as savvy consumers, they also want an implant that will be safe and worry free for years to come. In terms of breast augmentation, the IDEAL IMPLANT has met all the goals and expectations in terms of safety. These breast implants look good, feel good, they’re natural, and you’re able to detect a leak just by looking in the mirror.
