What Is Otoplasty?

by Ellen Mahony

close up of a woman's ear When your ears feel out of proportion or stick out more than you’d like, it can be something you notice every time you look in the mirror. For many people, otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a way to feel more comfortable with how they look.

Dr. Ellen Mahony, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Westport, Connecticut, performs otoplasty with great precision. Dr. Mahony’s experience helps her achieve very natural-looking results. Her background includes degrees from the University of Connecticut, Yale University, and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as specialized training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. She can adjust your ears so they’re more balanced with the rest of your face.

What Otoplasty Involves

Dr. Mahony performs otoplasty to reshape or reposition your ears. During surgery, Dr. Mahony makes small incisions behind your ears to sculpt the cartilage and adjust their position. She then uses fine sutures to secure the new shape as your ears heal naturally.

Recovery and Results

You should be able to return to work, school, or light activity about five to seven days after surgery. Dr. Mahony places a soft, protective dressing around your ears immediately after the procedure, which you’ll typically wear for the first few days. After that, you may switch to a lighter headband, especially at night, to help maintain your results while you sleep.

It’s common to experience mild swelling, bruising, or a feeling of tightness around the ears for the first week or two, but these effects will fade. Once healing is complete, your results will last for years!

Why People Choose Otoplasty

Many people choose otoplasty to change how their ears look or to feel more confident. Some want to reduce how far their ears stick out, while others want to correct unevenness or reshape their ears after an injury or birth defect. Children often have the surgery once their ears have fully developed, typically around age five or six, while adults choose it later in life for personal or cosmetic reasons.

Dr. Mahony helps you decide what approach best fits your goals, whether you want your ears to sit closer to your head, appear more symmetrical, or simply feel more in proportion with your features.
