As a mother, you know what it means to make sacrifices for your children, and you do so willingly and lovingly. One sacrifice you don’t have to make, however, is your appearance and self-confidence.
The fact is many moms experience lasting physical effects from giving birth and breastfeeding. The biological shift that accompanies pregnancy can leave stubborn deposits of fat in your abdomen, hips and thighs, as well as stretch marks and scarring. Plus, many women who have cesarean deliveries are troubled by the post-surgery “ledge” scar.
Dr. Ellen Mahony, a board-certified female plastic surgeon in Westport, Connecticut, understands and supports your desire to continue to look and feel great as a mother. Her Mommy Makeover empowers you to reclaim your body and renew your self-esteem. Custom-designed to meet your unique postpartum needs, it can include one or more procedures to help restore your body — and your soul — to its pre-pregnancy vigor.

Your Mommy Makeover Options
Many moms choose a body contouring procedure, opting for a breast enhancement and/or facial procedure to get their looks back on track. If you just have a little stubborn fat left over from your pregnancy (the infamous “muffin top”), or you simply need to address localized fat, stretch marks, and excess skin, other options include a tummy tuck, pubic lift, body lift and/or tumescent liposuction in Westport, near New Haven.
The combination of procedures may including one or more of:
- Breast enhancement options, with choices including augmentation to restore volume, lifts to return breasts to a higher and more youthful position, and reductions to remove excess skin and breast tissue acquired during pregnancy. Read more about the breast component of a Mommy Makeover.
- Body contouring options, such as liposuction to sculpt away that hormonal, resistant fat along the torso, hips, and thighs or a tummy tuck to repair the weakened abdominal wall and remove loose, stretched skin. A tummy tuck can also address the infamous “muffin top” and stretch marks. Dr. Mahony can also perform a pubic lift or a body lift as part of your Mommy Makeover.
- Facial surgery or skin care treatments, such as eyelid surgery or injectable fillers.
Mommy Makeover FAQ
Ellen wants you to feel informed and confident throughout your Mommy Makeover. To empower your decisions, she has provided her answers to some of the top questions about the procedure.
I’ve seen pictures of the tummy tightening after a Mommy Makeover and I’m not too thrilled with the scar! What are other options for reducing my mom “pouch” without a big scar?
I understand your concerns and many women share them – believe me, I hear it all the time. I like to be very honest with my patients though so I’ll tell it to you straight. 1) the scar is pretty much a given as it’s the only way to reduce the “pouch” and tighten the skin that’s been so stretched with those babies! Continuing with the honesty theme, as a board-certified plastic surgeon that has performed hundreds of these surgeries, I’m very skilled at incisions – both the placement and the closing sutures – which are half the battle in getting a good result. I promise you, you’ll be so pleased with your new body I think you’ll forget you even had these concerns.
How much liposuction will you perform with my Mommy Makeover? I feel like the mommy pounds ended up on my hips and thighs too!
You’re not alone! Many of my Mommy Makeover patients tell me that while the number on the scale might be close to what it was pre-baby, they just don’t feel like their body shape is the same. And the hips and thighs are very hormonal places to hold weight, so that makes sense. During our consultation, we’ll discuss in detail the changes you’ve experienced in your body and what your expectations are. I’ll then tailor a Mommy Makeover just for you, with the exact level of attention to each area of your body that concerns you. It’s really one of my favorite procedures to perform because each one is so unique based on the moms I work with.
Should I wait until I’m done having kids before I pursue a Mommy Makeover?
While it may be tempting to get your body back right away, I do recommend that you postpone your Mommy Makeover until you are sure you’re done having those kiddos! The main procedure most women seek in this transformation is the tummy tuck – you don’t want to get your flat tummy back and then months or even a couple of years later, stretch that skin with a new pregnancy. Come in and see me and we can discuss the specifics and make a plan that’s right for you.
I’m just wondering, what‘s the most popular combination of Mommy Makeover procedures?
In my practice it’s Liposuction or Tummy Tuck with either a Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift. Most of the time it’s a body and breast combination since those are the two areas on which motherhood has the biggest impact!
Will I need help at home during recovery?
Having some help over the first 3-5 days will make your life much easier, especially if you have other little ones at home! You will have restrictions on lifting, pushing, pulling and bending. The first time in and out of the shower, putting the post op garment on and getting into the bathroom will be much easier with some assistance. After 5 days, it depends on how well you feel and your confidence in managing your home, and yourself!
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover is a combination of procedures designed to restore a woman’s figure after pregnancy and childbirth. Because it can affect several different areas, the results can be very dramatic. Ellen’s Mommy Makeover patients tend to be among her most satisfied, because the process helps them rejuvenate feelings of confidence and femininity that they often haven’t felt in quite some time.
Why combine procedures?
As a mom, your time is precious and your responsibilities are great. Ellen understands that finding time for yourself takes special planning. The Mommy Makeover lets you get the results you want with just one surgery and one recovery time. You’ll see the transformation right away. Plus, there’s often a cost savings. Ask Ellen about it.

Mommy Makeover: Your Breasts
It’s a fact: Pregnancy and breastfeeding take a toll on a woman’s breasts. When you’re getting dressed for your day’s activities, have you noticed that your shirts and tops don’t fit like they used to? Are your bras working overtime to keep you looking good?
As a busy mom, you may think that a sagging, deflated appearance is just one of the many sacrifices you make for your family. But it doesn’t have to be. With a Mommy Makeover in Westport, Connecticut, by breast enhancement specialist Dr. Ellen Mahony, you can restore your breasts to their former, pre-pregnancy size and shape.
A Mommy Makeover is a customized combination of surgeries that Ellen performs in one operation to correct multiple issues commonly caused by pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. In addition to body and facial procedures, a Mommy Makeover almost always includes one of the following breast enhancement options:
- In a simple breast lift procedure, Ellen will remove excess skin and elevate your breasts to a more natural and sensual position.
- If your breasts have lost volume, you may wish to consider breast augmentation. Our New Haven and Westport patients who want to restore size and proportion frequently make this a part of their Mommy Makeover.
- In a breast reduction, Ellen removes excess, stretched skin that may have developed after pregnancy.
When you sit down with Ellen to discuss these and other Mommy Makeover options, you’ll have an honest, woman-to-woman conversation about your goals and expectations for your procedure.
Ellen understands that each woman’s needs and desires are totally unique. And by listening carefully to you, she’ll help you achieve the look you want. She has a variety of options ready at her Westport practice to help Mommy Makeover patients reshape their breasts for a little pick-me-up.
Mommy Makeover: Breast Surgery FAQ
Is it possible to have the breast procedure part of the Mommy Makeover done and wait for the tummy tuck until I’m done having kids? I’ve had two already so my tummy needs it but we’re not ruling out a third!
While it’s certainly possible – and you can breastfeed after having breast augmentation surgery – I don’t advise it if you think you’ll be expanding your family in the future. The main reason is that it’s better for you and for your budget to go under general anesthesia and surgery recovery just once. By combining the procedures in a Mommy Makeover – breast augmentation, tummy tuck and, often, a bit of liposuction – you only need anesthesia once. In addition, any help you require after surgery and time off from work is only done once.
What will the recovery process be like?
Your recovery time is dependent on what procedures you and Ellen decide to combine for your Mommy Makeover. Combining a tummy tuck with a breast procedure is the most common, and that usually requires 2 weeks or more. You’ll leave wearing a surgical support garment, then Ellen will advise you as to when you can switch to a soft sports bra. You are encouraged to sleep in an elevated position for the first few nights after surgery either on your bed with pillows propping you up or in a recliner.
You need someone to drive you home after your outpatient surgery and stay with you for at least the next 24 hours. Any discomfort can be managed with prescription and over-the-counter pain medications. You’ll typically see Ellen the day after surgery, and you’ll get detailed aftercare instructions about changing bandages, showering, restrictions on lifting things, returning for follow-up appointments, and other issues. You are encouraged to begin walking about as soon as you can after surgery, then you can resume further activity slowly over the course of a couple of months.
Ellen has found that her patients who are in good health and follow her instructions carefully tend to heal the fastest. She and her team are eager to answer any questions you may have during this time and are glad to make themselves available by phone or in the office.
Can I breastfeed after my procedure?
Yes, in most cases. If you think you might have more children after your Mommy Makeover, be sure to discuss this with Dr. Mahony. Using certain breast surgery techniques, she can take care to avoid the glands and ducts that are necessary for breastfeeding, no matter which kind of breast enhancement procedure you get.
When will it be OK to go bra shopping after my surgery?
Ellen knows how excited you are to shop for new, pretty bras to complement your new, pretty breasts. In general, 4 to 6 weeks after surgery is probably a good ballpark number. Especially for breast augmentation patients who get implants, it may be best to start by purchasing just a few bras at this time in case your implants settle more. Then you can make a bigger investment and purchase more bras later on. Be sure to have some comfortable no-underwire sports bras that are the right size to accommodate your breasts in the first few weeks after your surgery while you heal. Our team can help you determine what sizes you should purchase.
